Christiaan Maas bags another title

In the golfing world the expression that everything happens on the last nine holes was very apt in the BFMJS#North Final that took place at ERPM Golf Club on Saturday the 10th April.

The ERPM course was in great condition with soft yielding quick greens and punishing rough. An absolutely perfect Highveld day for great golf.

With 9 holes of golf left, in the 36 hole BFMJS#North Final, Amilkar Bhana (CCJ) was a comfortable 4 strokes ahead of Christiaan Maas (Pretoria CC). The final 9 was the decider with an unfortunate lost ball at the par 4 15th, Amilkar left the door open for Christiaan to pounce. Although Christiaan hit a wayward drive at the 16th, a magnificent approach to a metre and the subsequent birdie saw a 3 shot swing over 2 holes.

Back to the 18 hole morning session which saw Amilkar lead by 3 shots after posting a solid 71, followed jointly by Christiaan Mass and Kyle Wykes (CMR) on 74. These 3 players distanced themselves from the rest of the select field.

In his morning round of 71 Amilkar recorded 7 birdies, with a faultless putting display on the quick ERPM greens, but this was spoilt with a double bogey 6 at the 15th – the 15th was the eventual unfortunate undoing of Amilkar. Christiaan had a triple bogey at the 3rd hole, after a lost ball but bounced back with an eagle chip in at the next hole. Kyle Wykes was steadiness personified with 2 birdies and 4 bogeys. These were the 3 players in contention after the morning session.

Amilkar was immaculate on the greens throughout the day with a fluent putting touch. A turning point in the afternoon session were the birdies recorded by Christiaan at the 9th, 11th and 13th – this brought him to within two shots with 4 holes to go. As mentioned the unfortunate lost ball at the 15th was a telling blow.

In the end two of South Africa’s top 10 rated juniors showed great tenacity and a great fighting spirit. Christiaan showed why he is rated one of the top juniors, showing mental strength and a demeanour beyond his 17 years.

Although the winner does not go to the USA this year to play in the prestigious Junior North and South at Pinehurst in North Carolina the select field (winners of BFMJS Tour events) enjoyed the occasion.
