Cilliers wins play-off battle to secure Bridge Junior Series title in Strand

Cape Town, South Africa (September 2018) – 17-year-old Francois Cilliers won his second Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series title of the season in a thrilling play-off over Sean Cronje at a windy Strand Golf Club on Sunday 16 September 2018.

Cilliers, a pupil at Paarl Boys High, won the title at his home club after making birdie on the second play-off hole where Cronje’s birdie attempt slipped past the cup. It was a surprise win for Cilliers who had not been able to practice over the past two weeks due to school exams and illness. “The key was I putted really well, making almost everything between 3 and 10 feet,” he said.

There was some good news for 17-year-old Cronje who qualifies for the regional final of the Bridge Junior Series, because Cilliers had already won the season opening #BridgeJuniorSeries tournament at Royal Cape GC in July 2018. At the regional final they will battle it out with other series winners for the ultimate prize – an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the prestigious Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst, USA in 2019. The testing venue will also host the US Amateur next year.

“I have entered a number of the Bridge Junior Series events because I wanted a shot at playing at Pinehurst, so qualifying for the regional final is a big opportunity for me,” said Cronje, who is home schooled and gets to practice golf every day at Durbanville Golf Club.

The Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series, which is geared at golf development, launched in July 2017 with 16 tournaments countrywide featuring Under-19 and Under-13 divisions for boys and girls. Endorsed by GolfRSA, the series is managed by Peter Little of the South African Golf Development Board.

“Hats off to Francois and Sean for producing an exciting battle,” said Paul Stewart, Executive Director at Bridge Fund Managers. “These talented teens showed some steel out there in testing conditions and we look forward to hosting them at the regional final next year.”

The next two events in the #BridgeJuniorSeries are at Rondebosch GC on Tuesday 2 October 2018 and at Clovelly Country Club on Friday 5 October 2018, followed by up-country events at ERPM GC, Waterkloof GC and the Wanderers GC.
