John Rabie wins play-off at Robertson

Friday 25th September –

Windless, 30 degree heat in Robertson and the next day sweeping torrential rain at Clovelly. This described the weather for the planned back-to-back Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series (BFMJS) Tour events that took place at Robertson GC (Thursday 24th September) and Clovelly CC (Friday 25th September). Sadly the Clovelly event had to be eventually called off due to the rain.

At Robertson, after regulation play, local junior John Rabie and Jack Buchanan (Milnerton GC) faced each other in a play-off. Both players recorded level par rounds of 72. In the play-off John Rabie made a birdie on the 2nd hole to win. During regulation play John made a fast start going 3 under after 4 holes but a double drop at the par 4 8th stopped the momentum. A 2nd nine of 37, which included 2 birdies and 3 drops, saw him round in 72.

Jack had an opportunity to win in regulation play but a final par on the par 5 18th saw him tie with John. A number of players had the opportunity of joining John and Jack in the play-off, but final hole lapses prevented this. This was the 3rd runner-up placing for Jack Buchanan in the 4 BFMJS Tour events that he has played in!

By winning the Robertson leg John Rabie has qualified for the regional South finals of the BFMJS, where he will be playing for the opportunity to compete at Pinehurst in July 2021.

The Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series launched in 2017, is managed by the SA Golf Development Board and endorsed by GolfRSA. Open to boys and girls in the U13 and U19 divisions, it is played across 18 tournaments at leading courses countrywide.

Other notable scores at Robertson were the 6 players on 73, namely

Pieter Rossouw (Paarl), Angelo Keffers (Theewaterskloof), Mitch Phigeland (KD Mowbray), Vian van der Westhuizen (Robertson), Heinrich Appel (Durbanville) and Christopher Gutuza (KD Mowbray).

The B division was won by Jack Joubert (Stellenbosch) on 84 (counting out Conrick Lucas), the C Division by Lucenne Willemse (Riverside) on 45 points. The Under 13As was won by Alex Utterson (Steenberg) with an excellent 73 and the Under 13Bs by Arman Patel (Steenberg) on 38 points.
