Paarl boy Tyran wins Bridge golf title in Robertson

Robertson, South Africa (March 2019) – Tyran Snyders finally made it to the winner’s podium after 2 runners-up finishes in the prestigious Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series 2019, after shooting a sparkling 8-birdie 66 to win at a cold, wet and windy Robertson Golf Club on Sunday 10 March 2019.

By winning the title Tyran, a 17-year-old Paarl resident who is in Grade 12 at Paarl Boys High, qualifies for the regional finals of the juniorseries.bridgefm.co.za in April where the ultimate prize is an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the glittering Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst, USA in July this year.

“The chance to play in the USA is an opportunity of a lifetime for any junior golfer. Getting to compete against the best juniors in the world at one of the world’s best golf courses is the reason many of us practice so hard,” says Tyran, who previously placed second in the #BridgeJuniorSeries tournament at Royal Cape Golf Club and lost in a play-off at the event hosted by Rondebosch Golf Club.

A member of Durbanville Golf Club, Tyran has been working hard on his putting which was the key to his low scoring round, making key putts at crucial times to see off the challenge from runner up Jordan Duminy who posted a 69.

The highlight of Tyran’s round was the 17th hole – a tricky Par 4 playing directly into the wind, with Out of Bounds on both sides and a Penalty Area running across the fairway at the driving distance.

“Although I had a 2-shot lead, the round was far from over,” explains Tyran. “I decided to hit a 2-iron off the tee to keep the ball in play, and then I hit another 2-iron to the green. I was about 10-feet from the hole, and although I missed the putt, I made a solid par 4 on a very tough hole and kept my lead playing the 18th.”

His goals for 2019 include winning either the Strokeplay or Matchplay titles at the SA Boys u19 Championship at Humewood Golf Club, and either the Boland Amateur Strokeplay in Paarl or the WP Amateur in Bellville. Tyran also aims to be selected again for the Western Province Men’s and Western Province Junior teams.

His long-term goals are to go the US next year on a golf scholarship, as a pathway to a career as a professional golfer.

“Tyran is a loyal supporter of the Bridge Junior Series, having won two titles last season as well as the hole-in-one prize of a R5000 Unit Trust. So we are delighted he has won in 2019 and look forward to seeing him at the regional finals,” says Paul Stewart, Executive Director at Bridge Fund Managers. “Tyran is keen to study and play in the USA and if he wins the regional finals and gets to play at Pinehurst, I am sure he will catch the eye of leading US colleges.”

The #BridgeJuniorSeries launched in July 2017 with 16 tournaments countrywide featuring Under-13  and Under-19 divisions for boys and girls. Endorsed by GolfRSA, the series is managed by the SA Golf Development Board.
