Teen golfer Tyran books his spot in the USA

Cape Town, South Africa (April 2019) – Talented teenage golfer Tyran Snyders was in sublime form shooting 65 and 72 to win the 36-hole South Final of the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series at King David Mowbray Golf Club on Sunday 7 April 2019.

By claiming the title Tyran, in matric at Paarl Boys High, secured an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the North and South Championship at Pinehurst, USA in July 2019. The historic Pinehurst hosted its first Major, the PGA Championships, back in 1936 and has since hosted three US Opens as well as the Ryder Cup.

“To play an iconic golf course such as Pinehurst, is a life changing experience which many golfers dream of and I am very grateful to have this opportunity,” said Tyran, a member of Durbanville Golf Club.

Tyran got off to a scorching start in the 36-hole final and reached -9 when he birdied the 14th hole, with his form proving too hot to handle for an elite field which included Nomads SA U19 Matchplay Champion Ben van Wyk who shot 67 and 74 to secure the runner-up spot at KD Mowbray.

“The key to going low was capitalising on the par 5s as they are relatively short, and as in any good round I boxed a few putts,” said Tyran whose conquest of the par 5s included an eagle on the 6th when his perfectly struck 4 iron stopped close to the hole.

As the pressure began to mount on the second 18, Tyran’s birdie spree slowed. “I was feeling a bit of pressure as the stakes were very high and I know what Ben is capable of,” said Tyran. “But with a four shot lead on the final nine holes, I was the one in control and just had to keep mistakes to a minimum by hitting fairway and greens.”

Tyran will be joined at Pinehurst in July by Casey Jarvis who shot 63 and 66 to secure a runaway win in the 36-hole North Final of the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series at ERPM Golf Club on Saturday 6 April 2018.

“Tyran is an impressive young man and produced exceptional golf in the final,” said Paul Stewart, Chief Executive at Bridge Fund Managers. “He and Casey will do South Africa proud at Pinehurst.”

The #BridgeJuniorSeries launched in July 2017 and this year attracted over 1500 players to the 19 tournaments countrywide, where junior golfers vied for the right to play in the two regional finals. Managed by the SA Golf Development Board, the juniorseries.bridgefm.co.za is endorsed by Golf RSA.
